Another jaw dropper with Centerpoint’s Tarzan (Review)

I sometimes wonder if Utah theatre patrons know how good we have it? Especially with productions like Tarzan at Centerpoint Legacy this is not your ordinary community theatre show. It is as good as anything you might see at any equity house. In fact, I’d put it up with anything that might be staged at Disneyland and that’s pretty incredible for something that’s far less money than such productions would charge. I truly was blown away by what I saw with this Tarzan (as I always am at Centerpoint.)

This Tarzan is on Centerpoint’s Second Stage which started out as their black box but they’ve transformed it into an immersive space quite unlike anything else offered in Northern Utah at this time. My friend Keolanani, who joined me, said it was as impressive as when she saw Tarzan at Tuacahn with the original Broadway actor playing Tarzan! Walking into the theater was like walking into a jungle with the screens and other jungle sets surrounding the audience in imagery, sound and light. It honestly was just like stepping into Tarzan’s Treehouse at Disneyland.

Anyone who reads my reviews knows I’m often not the biggest fan of projections- particularly when they are made using AI. I would much rather have a handcrafted less polished set than an AI projections. However, at Centerpoint they are using projections to add to the artistry not take away. This is particularly true with the opening sequence of Tarzan with a ship is projected on a column of fabric in the middle of the stage with waves surrounding us as the actors portray the dramatic events happening to Tarzan’s parents. It is a jaw dropping experience put on by director Aaron Ford (someone told me this is Aaron’s first time directing at Centerpoint and if that’s the case well done sir!) with scenic and projection design by Josh Roberts.

The cast is also top rate with both the singing and dancing. I particularly admired Levi Larsen’s athletic performance as Tarzan bounding all across the stage. He has terrific chemistry with Summer Sloan Alvey as Jane and Janzell Lulka Kim Tutor as Kala. My favorite moments vocally of the show probably come in Act 2 when we see more of Jane and Tarzan together particularly “Strangers Like Me” and “Everything That I Am.” One benefit to the Broadway musical over the animated film is we actually get to see the characters sing the songs unlike the background music of the movie. I’d also say the new songs for the Broadway show are decent. Certainly better than the new songs in shows like The Little Mermaid or Mary Poppins. And at Centerpoint the visuals are so immersive that one hardly cares what the characters are singing when it looks so great.

I also want to make sure and give a shout out to the other technical elements of the show. The sound design by Alex Stewart is wonderful with ambient noises being ever-present creating the feeling of a jungle at all times. The lighting by Colin Skip Wilson is also key to making the projections work and feel as immersive as they do. It’s an experience I won’t soon forget. That’s for sure.

The only critique I saw with this Tarzan is the costumes, while impressive, looked a little more like birds than gorillas, and they didn’t have the actors on all 4s a lot, so I think that added to that impression.

Disney’s Tarzan is playing until August 8th but being on Centerpoint’s Second Stage it’s likely to sell out quickly. I highly recommend getting tickets for the entire family as it’s definitely going to be one of the theatrical highlights of 2026 in Northern Utah. Tickets can be purchased here.

Disney’s Tarzan is a musical based on the 1999 animated film of the same name with music and lyrics by Phil Collins. The book is by David Henry Hwang and it is based on the screenplay by Tab Murphy, Bob Tzudiker and Noni White. Both are adaptations of the novel Tarzan of the Apes by Edgar Rice Burroughs. It first premiered on Broadway in 2006.
